Pillsbury Bake-Off Cookbooks
Information Page at A Shop 4 Antiques

Welcome to the Pillsbury Bake-Off Cookbooks page at A Shop 4 Antiques.
This page will assist collectors with older vintage and more current Pillsbury Bake-Off Cookbook identification.

Many collectors enjoy searching for and using Pillsbury Bake-Off Cookbooks. Some vintage Pillsbury Bake-Off Cookbooks are relatively common and some are quite elusive, so they make for a fun and challenging collectible. Bake-Off cookbooks are small paperbacks, usually about 6" X 9". Each cookbook contains 100 recipes. Recipe categories include cookies, breads, entrees, desserts, and more. The very first grand prize winning recipe was a cinnamon nut roll called "No-Knead Water Rising Twists." The first Pillsbury Bake-Off contest was held in 1949. The cookbook presenting recipes from the 1949 contest was published in 1950, and the series has continued until the present time. (The dates listed below the photos on this page are copyright or publishing dates, not contest dates.)

The contest was originally named "Pillsbury's $100,000 Grand National Recipe and Baking Contest." The name of the contest changed gradually over time. The Bake-Off name was introduced with the 9th cookbook in 1958, which noted the recipes were from "Pillsbury's Best 9th Grand National Bake-Off". The phrase "Grand National Bake-Off" was used through the 16th cookbook, then the "Grand National" was dropped. The 1966 cookbook said the recipes were from the "17th annual Bake-Off".

A Bake-Off cookbook was published every year through 1978. From 1980 onward, contest cookbooks were published every other year. Pillsbury was acquired by General Mills in October 2001.

Our thoughts on Condition:
Cookbooks were intended to be used, so most will have at least light wear. Scuffs, stains, creases and torn spots are very common. Most collectors realize this, and expect to find mint condition cookbooks rarely. Our definitions for grading terms are:

Mint Absolutely as new. No bends, tears, or scuffs. Mint condition books have been well protected and have never been dropped in a drawer to slide around with other cookbooks.
Fine or Near Mint means the cookbook is very close to it's original factory condition.
Excellent means the cookbook may have very minor shelf wear and very minor corner scuffs.
Very Good means no major tears or bends, but does have normal scuffs and wear
Good or Average means the cookbook may have some tears and bends, but is not worn out.
Moderate means the cookbook has more prominent tears and bends.
Poor means the cookbook is good enough to be used, but is probably not good enough for a collection. However, it will still have readable recipes. Poor condition cookbooks are great for people who want to use the recipes. Some people maintain an excellent condition collection to display and buy poor condition cookbooks to use the recipes.
